Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

There are some monster blackfin tunas biting on our Fort Lauderdale fishing charters. Most of the blackfins that we catch are small ones, between 2-6 pounds, about the size of a football. Throughout the year, these little tunas are all over the reef, swallowing up any small baitfish that they come across. They get big quick, reaching about 10-12 pounds in the first year. From that size, they can swallow up the larger baitfish and really put on the weight. Blackfin tunas grow really fast. In May, we get some of the biggest blackfin tunas to be caught all year long. This past week, we've been pulling in a steady stream of 20-30 pounders. Today, we caught one so big that were compelled to look up the world record to see if we were a contender for the World Record Blackfin tuna. The tuna we caught was 39 pounds, a solid beast of a tuna and one of the biggest blackfin tunas I have ever seen hit the dock in Fort Lauderdale. I've caught my fair share of 30-35 pounders but never one quite this large. With the big tunas biting strong, we're spending a lot of our time trolling the reefs or live baiting using the kites on the rough days. Tunas are one of the only species that actually prefer the slick flat calm days for their feeding frenzies. Most fish bite best on rough, choppy days, but not tuna. Tunas have really good eyesight, so that might be a factor on why they like the calm days best. Regardless, tunas are biting strong on the Ft Lauderdale fishing trips this week and the good bite usually continues through the month of May and into June. Good luck out there on the water everyone. Tight Lines,
