Cooler Temps And Great Fishing In Fort Lauderdale

Capt. Vinnie Sacks
October 22, 2023
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Hello everyone Capt. Vinnie here, This week in Fort Lauderdale we had some excellent fishing and some excellent weather conditions with our first cold front of the year. The inshore report is where most of the action has been, just on the edge of the reef there has been some excellent kingfish action going on right now, the best depth has been anywhere from 80 to 110 feet of water, the mornings seem to be the best but there has been a fairly good bite in the afternoons as well, trolling has been the preferred method but live bait has been getting the bigger sized fish right now, the average size on the kingfish would be 4-7lbs right now with a 15lb fish being on the large size, other then kingfish there has been a few mahi mahi in the mix chasing live ballyhoo in shallow water as shallow as 40 feet, also with the mahi there has been a fairly good amount of sailfish showing up chasing the ballyhoo as well. The best way to target the sailfish and mahi is going to be to match the hatch and catch some live ballyhoo, slow trolling them with circle hooks is going to give you the best chance for success. Moving a little deeper on some of the local shipwrecks there has been some larger amberjacks starting to show up and live bait is going to be key if your looking to catch them. As far as an offshore report there was some nice sized skipjack tunas that recently showed up in waters depths from 400 feet on out. Your going to want to look for bird activity which is going to be an obvious sign of life, trolling is going to be preferred method and when locating the birds your going to want to put your baits far behind the boat because the tuna scare easily due to the sound of the motor. Smaller baits work best on lighter leader. As far as an offshore mahi report, there hasn't been much to fish to offshore like weedlines or anything but if you can find some floating debris its going to be like finding the motherload. Its always smart to bring some live baits when going offshore just incase you happen to come across something like that. Last but not least there has been a fairly decent swordfish bite going on right now with the average fish being around 100lbs, winter months in Fort Lauderdale can produce some big swordfish so if you have ever wanted to try and catch a swordfish the next few months will be your best chance. This week be sure to check out some of the great photos of some recent catches we had while out on our deep sea fishing charters, also remember to give us a follow on social media platforms like facebook and instagram @Ybnormalsportfishing for daily fishing content. As we approach more towards our winter months I would expect to see alot more sailfish biting has well as some wahoo and a few larger mahi mahi inshore, if your coming down to Fort Lauderdale and looking to do some deep sea fishing we have some availability for the rest of October and would love to show you a great time on the water.
