Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

The fishing on our drift boat, Catch My Drift, this week have been very interesting. We're catching some pretty cool fish. First of all, the yellowtails and mangrove snappers are biting decently with most of them being keeper sized. Those snappers along with a few muttons, groupers and lots of grunts, porgies and triggers have made up the majority of our drift fishing catches.

Yesterday, when we got all the cloudy skies covering the whole coastline, we caught some pretty interesting fish. We caught a big hogfish (I call them hogsnapper just because I always have since I was a kid). These fish are super cool looking with a long snout, hog-like fangs for teeth and wicked color patter all over their body. They also have a cool dorsal fish that resembles the roosterfish dorsal, just different colors. Another really cool fish we caught yesterday during the overcast skies was a huge African Pompano. These are very uncommon fish to catch when fishing Fort Lauderdale. We catch them here and there whenever you least expect it. They also have very long streamers and they are long and tall, but very thin so they have a unique body shape to them. African Pompano are great eating when you can catch a keeper sized one.

On days we go deep, the vermillion snappers are biting pretty good too. When we fish for vermillion snappers, we fish in over 200 feet of water, dropping the baits all the way to the bottom. It's a lot more work but when they are biting, it's well worth the effort. Sometimes we catch some big almaco jacks or amberjacks doing this too and if you're really lucky, a big grouper. I like deep dropping a lot, but on the drift boat, the conditions have to be right or it is a huge mess. The best conditions are not too crowded of a trip, calm seas, little to no wind and light current.

It's been a good week of fishing on our Fort Lauderdale drift boat. The great thing about drift fishing is that you never know what you're going to catch. Good luck to everyone fishing this week. I'll sea ya on the water.
