Daytime Swordfish Trip

Capt. David Ide
May 4, 2016
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

April 23, 2016

Unbelievably, here I am talking about swordfish for the second time in a week! We had a daytime swordfish trip today with everything ready to go and light winds, maybe 5 miles per hour out of the southeast. We were headed to about 1,200 feet of water to test out our new Hooker electric reel rigged to a 130 Penn International. So we made our first drop, and as soon as it hit bottom, the rod just bent right over with a big bite. Thirty minutes later, we had a 180 lb sword in the boat. The Lady Pamela II ran back to our previous drop spot with gear ready to go and we make another drop. Ten minutes later we started to get a bite, mate Freddie reeled the bait up 20 feet then dropped it back down. The reel instantly started peeling off line as we got another big bite. It took 30 more minutes to reel in another 180 lb swordfish! We are now two for two on swords in just over an hour.

We moved the Lady Pamela II back to the drop spot for a third time, got the bait down on the bottom, and you guessed it, we are hooked up again in barely five minutes! Our anglers had this last fish to the boat in 30 minutes and they were ready to go back to the marina. We caught so many swords they were getting bored. Most people are lucky to get one sword out of every five fishing trips, and we got three in under two hours!
