Deep Sea Fishing/ Ft. Lauderdale

Capt. John Logan
April 8, 2011
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Deep sea fishing in Ft. Lauderdale is one of the hotter attractions of things to do here. For the last 3 or 4 years, Brian's family has given him a gift certificate for fishing with us and this year he showed up with some new guys.
Last year's trip with Brian left much to be desired, with grey skies, some rain and seas that were a bit bouncy making one of his guests seasick. This year, conditions were just perfect with 2' seas, sunny skies and some very hot fishing. He is such a great guy, he stops by often on his morning walk with his wife to say hi if we're in.
After some bought live bait, we set up south of the port. Dolphin and Sailfish fishing has been pretty hot as of late. We never caught a Dolphin or Mahi-mahi as they are called today because it seemed we couldn't keep a bait in the water. Those darn, pesky Sailfish kept showing up and the first one went to Brian.
It took some time to get this fish to the boat and we never boated him for pictures or measurement, he was just too tired to mess with. He was released boat side.
We no sooner set back up when another fish showed up and the game was on again. Things get a little fuzzy in here because we also caught a bonito and a Kingfish somewhere in there. I don't remember the gentleman's name that caught the second fish but he got the fin to the boat in much less time than Brian. Oh the grief that was passed around.
More bait, another set up and here was another. Joe was our angler and I thought he was going to give up on the biggest of the three fish we caught today. But he got his second wind and finished the job. Another release in the water and the fish slowly swam away.
This last battle had taken us from the bite zone into deeper waters. We set back up in hopes of a Mahi when an average Hammerhead shark appeared. After seeing what Joe had been through, no one was too excited to take the rod though I didn't expect a long battle. Very light tackle for even an average shark. Finally, Joe 2 stepped up and did a GREAT job in landing this fish on light leader. Funny, no one was making fun this time, it was very quiet in the cockpit as he tackled this fish.
We hope to see you next year Brian. It's usually a new group of guys but maybe, a few will return next year.
Deep sea fishing in Ft. Lauderdale… One of the great things to do while here.
