Deep Sea Fishing Ft.Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt.Zsak

Capt. David Zsak
September 20, 2010
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Wind was out of the northeast this past week, about 15-20 miles per hour, which sets the stage for the migration of mullets. Huge schools of mullets were migrating off of Ft. Lauderdale this week, and in return, the predators were not far behind. The Sailfish, sharks and other predators are following the bait.

With the beginning of sailfish season, the most productive way to catch them is with live bait. The different methods are: kite fishing with live bait, pulling live bait from the riggers, or slow trolling dredges with Ballyhoos. The majority of the sailfish that were hooked up this week was in the range of 100-180 ft. of water; mixed in were also some nice King fish in the range of 10-15 lbs. As the temperature continues to drop, more schools of sailfish will be migrating down past Ft. Lauderdale.

Sailfish is one of the most exciting fish to hook up. They are very acrobatic – their range of weight would be anywhere between 40-65 lbs with their range of length being 5 to 8 feet long. The average time to hook up a sailfish and bring it to a boat is anywhere between 20-30 minutes on light tackle.
