Deep Sea Fishing Ft.Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt.Zsak

Capt. David Zsak
September 26, 2010
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Jay DeVenny returns to the scene of the crime 20 years later

Jay went deep sea fishing in Ft. Lauderdale on the Happy Day Today with his father Jim when Jay was 12 years old. At that time he hooked up a 36 lb. Barracuda on light tackle. This was a large accomplishment for this young man.

Jay, who lives in Dallas, Texas, is now 32 years old and has returned with his wife, Betsy for a morning charter in celebration of their newly born son. He will soon be following his father's and grandfather's footstep, which will be the third generation of deep sea fishing with the Happy Day Today Charter Boat in Ft. Lauderdale.

The winds today were out of the east northeast, 15 mph; the seas were running 3' to 5'. The blue water was pushed in all the way to the second reef, and large schools of Mullets were migrating down the coast past Ft. Lauderdale, which in turn bring different varieties of predators to feed on them. I decided to do some trolling with Ballyhoo on the surface baits and Bonita strips on the two plainers. As the conditions looked better and better for Sailfish, I decided to pull in one plainer and to replace it with a dredge. It did not take too long before a Sailfish was attracted by the dredge. Behind the dredge was a naked Ballyhoo, and the sailfish decided to attack the bait, and "wallah", the Sailfish was hooked up!

Betsy's turn was up, so she was the one who fought the Sailfish for 20 minutes on light tackle, and brought the fish to the boat. She was grinning from ear to ear and thrilled with her accomplishment. Mitch, the mate, grabbed a hold of the Sailfish and brought it into the cockpit. Mitch took a quick measurement of the fish and it was 78" long. "Keep taking pictures", I yelled down to Jay. As we released the fish, he happily swam away.

Jay, in turn, caught a mixture of Barracudas and Bonitas, which brought back memories of the Barracuda that he caught 20 years ago on the Happy Day Today.
