Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Beautiful weather again in Sunny South Florida - winds out of the west northwest, 10-15 mph, temperature in the upper 60's. Mr. Mathbellest and family from Finland chartered the Happy Day Today to do some deep see fishing in South Florida off of Ft. Lauderdale before leaving on their cruise trip to the Caribbean. Mr. Mathbellest said he was just interested in catching fish for his son, Michael, for whom he chartered the boat.

We started off trolling using two plainers with a 3 ½ drom spoon on one, a blue and white sea witch with a Bonita strip on the other and Ballyhoos for surface baits. We were trolling off of the sea buoy in Ft. Lauderdale in 120 ft. of water over one of the wrecks that in the past week had been holding King Fish. After catching a mix bag of Bonitas and King Fish, Michael said he wanted to catch something big. So we went to see if we could find a Shark in the old Shark hole. We went out to 325 ft. of water and set up our Shark baits: One bait on the bottom, one mid range and two on the surface.
Michael had a lot of patience waiting for the fish. What seemed like every two minutes, Michael would ask, "When are we going to catch one?" Finally the deep line bent over and the rod tip almost touched the water. As the line peeled off the reel at a fast rate, Mitch was pulling in the rest of the baits. We put Michael in the fighting chair and he started to live his dream. After 15 minutes his Dad came over to help Michael catch his breath. After 45 minutes of fighting the fish, Mitch grabbed a hold of the leader, bringing the Hammerhead to the side of the boat, and we all took pictures of the Shark.
As I looked over to Michael, he did not have to say a word - his face said it all. On the way in, I asked Mitch how our angler was doing and Mitch's respond was that he was passed out on the sofa. Michael will have a good fish story to tell his school friends when he gets back home.
We headed back from our 4 hour deep sea fishing charter trip to the dock at Bahia Mar, in South Florida, Fort Lauderdale. This ends another successful and adventurous fishing excursion on the Happy Day Today with Captain Zsak.
