Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

This week was Navy week in Ft. Lauderdale Port Everglades. The U.S. Navy brought in five different ships ranging from aircraft carriers to atomic submarines. The Ft Lauderdale Beach area was a relaxing week for the sailors from the U.S. Navy. They departed Sunday morning from Port Everglades Ft. Lauderdale, South Florida. It was an extra treat for Wayne Magnum and friends from sunny Ft. Lauderdale who chartered the Happy Day Today for a fishing excursion and watched the ships as they departed Port Everglades Ft. Lauderdale.

We started off on our deep sea fishing excursion by doing some trolling off of the sea buoy in Ft. Lauderdale. We had Ballyhoos for surface baits, four of them, and two plainers one with a pink sea witch in front of a Bonita strip and the other side with a 3 ½ blue reflector drome spoon. Our first fish were a couple of King fish, ranging from 5-10 lbs. and a couple of Bonitas and Black Fin Tunas. From trolling, I decided to go to one of our local wrecks that sits in 210 ft. of water to make a drop with live Goggle Eyes - targeting wreck fish: Groupers, Snappers, Cobia, Amberjacks, etc. As we made our first drop, the rod bent over producing a nice Amberjack in the 40 lb. range. The current was going to the north at 3 knots, which made it difficult to hold the bottom, so we decided to go back to trolling. These anglers were looking for edible fish, therefore, catching Sailfish, even though we saw three Sailfish in the area, was not an option. The rest of the day, these anglers hooked up more Kings and Barracudas

It was time to start heading back from our deep sea salt water fishing charter to the dock at Bahia Mar, Fort Lauderdale South Florida. This ends another successful and adventurous deep sea fishing excursion on the Happy Day Today with Captain Zsak.
