Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

The dolphin are biting great this week on our deep sea fishing charters out of Fort Lauderdale. There is a nice weedline formed in 570ft of water, about 2 and a half miles offshore. On our fishing charters this week, we usually start off on the reef until the action slows and the poke our nose offshore, to see if we can find some mahi. There is significantly more action on the reefs with lots of kingfish, blackfin tunas and bonitos biting. But if you're willing to trade that action for the chance at a big bull dolphin, it sometimes pays off. We've gotten lucky on several trips this week on big mahi found offshore. It's a bit of a gamble, but on the days it pays off, it's incredible.

November is one of the best 2 months of the year for mahi-mahi. It's a toss-up between November or April as to which is the best month of the year to catch mahi-mahi in Fort Lauderdale. They must spawn twice a year here in south Florida because they seem to get extra aggressive and extra hungry during those months. And the average size of the mahi that we catch also goes way up. Instead of the normal 3-5 pound schoolies and the occassional gaffer size dolphin in the 6-12 pound range, we actually catching mahi with a 10-14 pound average and a couple lucky fish pushing 30 pounds. I love it when the big dolphin come through.

It's great fishing on our sportfishing charters this week. My fishing report focused on mahi-mahi dolphin fish, cause they are the coolest! But good there's also good fishing on grouper, cobia, kingfish, blackfin tuna and the rare sailfish. It's a great week to come fishing. I'll sea you on the water.
