Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

This mornings charter was with return clients from the pompano beach area, they had recently charterd us last month and had a great time and caught a few nice fish. Every one was very eager to get out there, the weather made it a tiny bit choppy but very fishable, we started out trolling the reef with our basic spread of 5 surface baits and 2 planners down. The weather consisted of east winds 10-15 mph, seas being 2-4 feet and plenty of scattered seaweed along the reef. Trolling between 200 to 80 feet of water we were able to catch 3 king mackerel, as well as a few bonito, venturing offshore we found plenty of bird activity around 300 feet of water with some scatted debris. One of our rigger baits goes down with a nice mahi mahi or dolphin fish, this are colorful good eating fish know for there great acrobatics. Following the local bird activity we managed 4 more nice size mahi in the 300 foot area.
While being out in the deep we got a very hard surface bite with a mysterious fish that stayed deep in the water Column.
After clearing all of the other rods, the fish had jumped far behind the boat and we were able to make out the shape of what was going to be a beautiful Atlantic sailfish, with a great angler on the rod and a very experienced crew we were able to land and successfully release the sailfish within 20 minutes of an epic battle. With time running out and very happy customers we made our way back to the dock to filet fish and tell fish stories
