Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Sailfishing and dolphin fishing has been the name of the game over the last week. We have been kite fishing when the wind is up and at time the action has been non stop.
The dolphin fish have been on the reef and tearing through our live baits. Schools of fish have been passing through and the fish have been from 4-15lbs. We have had to pack up and move to get away when the smaller dolphin come through to give us a shot at other species of fish. This is only after we have caught our fair share of the dolphin fish. The move has been generally in vane though as we have caught dolphin everywhere in the last week.
The sailfishing off fort lauderdale has been great. We have not had to run far most days as the current has been running strong and the sailfish are pushing through. Most charter half days have had between 2 and 8 shots with the more when the current has been really running. Best bet has been herring and goggle eyes on the kites and downriggers then the wind dies. Just this weekend a two day tournament was held and the top teams had over 20 sailfish over the two days. Though the tournament boats are generally fishing slightly longer day than a typical charter, 10-20 fish is an anyday possiblility from now through April.
Offshore the small tunas remain. Anywhere from 200-750ft of water we have run into blackfin and skipjack tunas. The Fish have been on the smaller side so best bet has been to scale down the tackle to 4-8lbs line to make the catch more sporting. The fish have been eating to casted jigs and trolling feathers.
Back on the reef there are kingfish biting when the dolphin dissapear. When the current has died the dolphin have dissapeared the kingfish have been active and have ranged from 8-20lbs.
