Find Fish Deeper in Water Column

Capt. Mario Cote
May 28, 2014
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

At the beginning of this week, fishing trips encountered rough seas and an unfavorable south current. The wind and current has improved as the week has progressed.

We've been fishing mostly around Port Everglades Inlet because of the good success we had the previous week. With the strong wind and south current, we fished north of the inlet, in around 100'. We put goggle eyes on the kite, pilchards on flat lines and a pilchard on a weighted line. We stayed in that area that had been so good for us the previous week, but this time, we could not get a bite. As time began to run low, I decided to fish a little deeper and found a good kingfish bite in-between 160' and 180'. We ended up catching so many that we released a lot of them.

This past week, action on our surface baits – whether flat lined or on the kite – was rather quite. We did manage a 30 lb. blackfin tuna on a flat line, but the rest of our fish where all caught on deeper baits, mostly goggle eyes. But fishing deeper in the water column has produced some good size fish for our customers.
