Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

The fish are coming to Ft Lauderdale for Spring Break and they're already starting to show up. This week, some big wahoo started to bite which are a good indicator for fishing in general. Wahoo are big, hungry gamefish. They are the fastest fish in the ocean and they burn a lot of energy, therefor they need to eat constantly. They follow the food and they general precede any migration of other fish moving into our area. Wahoo action showing up is usually followed by lots of tuna, mahi-mahi and sailfish.

We did some bottom fishing this week. Some big fish started showing up around the wrecks and some of our rockpile bottom fishing spots. After 45 years of fishing Fort Lauderdale, you get a pretty full book of spots to fish out here. Amberjacks usually show up really strong in March-May, but they are already beginning to show themselves on the wrecks out front. We've also hit some big groupers and snappers too. The bite isn't fully matured into the Spring fishing season yet, but it's building fast.

It's good action trolling the reefs and that's the best thing to do this time of year when the bite is just getting started. Catch the fish where you know they are at and once you've got your fill, you can try some wrecks or do some shark fishing or head offshore... the longshot stuff. Plenty of bonitos, kingfish, cudas and even a few awesome fish like sailfish and wahoo biting if you're lucky. The best fishing of the year is just in front of us. A few more weeks and we'll be knee deep in fish. Good luck everyone and I'll sea you on the water.
