Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

February 2009
Fishing Fort Lauderdale this month started out with a bang, with a couple of back to back cold fronts sail fishing was on target. However, once the moon was full the fishing came to a halt. We had several tough days with few bites, despite all efforts. Whether you trolled, live baited, bottom fished or shark fished it was tough. Once the moon passed, fishing has been great we are seeing several sailfish per trip. Bottom fishing has picked up, with some truly giant amberjacks showing up for their yearly migration south. Guarding the deepwater artificial wrecks with a vengeance, amberjacks will eat almost any properly presented live bait on a big rod with a minimum of 50# test. Heavier tackle is a needed to pull the big jacks away from the wreck so they do not hang you up and cut you off. Be prepared for a tough battle, amberjacks do not stop even once they are in the boat. Longtime repeat customer Nino from Boston found out just how tough amberjacks are this week when he wrestled an 80 fish to the boat. Great Job Nino! It is back breaking but rewarding work to tame one of these great game fish. Shark fishing is picking up as well as springtime approaches. The mighty hammerhead is a welcome guest aboard the Local Knowledge, as we specialize in fishing for these incredible creatures. The hammerhead's broad head and face has the most surface for detecting wounded prey and it also has the biggest nostrils of all the sharks for finding the scent of your bait. We normally shark fish off of Fort Lauderdale in about 350 feet of water approximately 1.5 miles off the beach. We use 100# test on big penn international 80 wide reels and rods thicker than your broomstick at home to capture these magnificent animals. We also encounter bull sharks, makos and the occasional thresher shark.
