Fishing in Fort Lauderdale mid August

Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

This is the time of year when we can experience some good numbers of fish on our charters. Staying close to near shore reefs often results in quite a few fish for our anglers. Many fish are taken in water that is less than 150 feet in depth. That depth out front here for fishing in Fort Lauderdale is just over a mile off the beach. Summer Bonito and Kingfish have been here and make up the bulk of our catches, but we have also caught a couple of Sailfish and some very nice Mutton Snappers as well as Mahi in those same depths. Warm but again not ridiculously hot, but certainly warm enough that the bottled waters we supply on our charters leave the ice chest pretty steadily. Sunscreen and a hat not a good idea but a great idea, as although it isn't that warm the UV index is at the top of the chart.

Trolling in and out and across those reefs will draw the Kingfish and Bonito bites regularly but those Bonito will begin to thin out very soon. Trolling out off of the reef and then a strong turn allowing the baits fished on the deep lined planers to dig deeper and has worked especially well on the Kingfish. A couple of Sails as I mentioned also as we have drug the baits off the reef top and into the deeper water and made that turn to approach the reef line again.

Some really nice Blackfin Tuna just off the reef as well. That big boy in the photo weighed in @ 35 pounds. Only an occasional Wahoo but everyone, not just us, expects to see more of them very soon. Some really nice ones begin to be taken here in August and they are always fun.

As you can see by the photos we have again caught some more nice Mutton Snappers.
Structure in the vicinity of 150 feet of water has been good for us. These are good fat fish and fun on a slightly lighter rod.
Tight lines and good fishing from all of us here aboard the Marin My Darlin, we'll see you on the reefs near shore. Mid August, a great time of year to fish close in and put some fish on the ice.
