Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Charter fishing for Wahoo off Fort Lauderdale has been exceptional the last week or so. Both good sized and multiple fish have been caught on trips and today's trip began with one of these exceptional fish.
Bill, Jackie, Allen and Barbara came all the way from England just to go fishing… Ok, the fact is that this was a spur of the moment decision to try some fishing off Fort Lauderdale. Bill admitted never having done this before.
January is supposed to be Sailfish season but unusually warm weather has slowed the migration and the Sails have yet to appear in any numbers. So we began trolling today in hopes of some action on our way north to begin live bait fishing.
I prefer if fishing is somewhat slow to catch the nice fish toward the end but the fish gods don't care what I prefer and chose the first bite of the day to be the best fish caught this trip. Trolling past an anchored ship, a Wahoo lying in wait chose to try the high line fished from the flybridge. The reel sung out and was passed down to Bill. As line peeled from the reel, Chris began reeling all other lines in so we could slow the loss of line down and by the time we began backing up we were down to 1/3 spool of line left.
Did I mention Bill had never done this before? He sure wasn't expecting what came next… A 25 minute battle with a foul hooked something that was not coming in easy. Only after doing an exceptional job of angling and following directions from both Chris and me did we finally see the fish. He was hooked in the belly; the hook had torn quite some ways and was hanging by a thread. The fish came up exhausted from lack of oxygen and was dead weight which exceeded the test of the line by a few pounds.

We like these shots at sea to show the fish's color before it fades. This Wahoo was coming with us. Had the fish bit the hook with his razor teeth, chances are we wouldn't have caught him, those teeth cut right through the mono leader we use for surface baits and many have been missed lately just for this reason.
We also caught a small Kingfish which we threw back and a couple large Bonito but the pinnacle of our trip was the first bite of the day, that Wahoo.
Congratulation's Bill, on an excellent job well done.
One exciting fish can make a charter fishing trip off Fort Lauderdale spectacular.
