Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Deep sea charter fishing off Fort Lauderdale in May is one of my favorite times of year to fish. But just because it IS May doesn't guarantee a great fishing trip as was shown the day before with Nat and the boys. And it was that trip that had us choosing to head off shore on this all day adventure with Pat and his crew from Tennessee.
The action on the reef since the full moon has been quick first thing in the morning and then ending. With an early start in mind, we began on the reef trolling to see what might be caught. A couple Bonito, always good to have in the box on an all-day charter and one other hit… A Sailfish jumped our high line as we wound in one of our lines that didn't connect.
Pat got the call and did an excellent job of landing this fish before we boated, photographed and released him back into the ocean. Not a bad start but things were already slowing down on the reef so it was time to head out off shore.
We spent over an hour traveling out into the deep without a bite. Scattered weed kept Chris busy clearing lines and we talked of what we were looking for and needed to be successful. Debris in the water like weed beds, wood, carpet, anything floating. Birds working the water, especially Frigate birds were an excellent sign. Oh yeah, and jumping fish is always a good one too.
Pat found our first bounty, a bird working an area. We were alone as we approached and a few lines went down, all with Mahi-mahi on them. We worked the school for a bit and caught 2 or 3 before the bird and fish disappeared… Back on the hunt.
A group of boats to our north were trolling and apparently Pat has excellent eye sight, for it was he that spotted the bird over the boats. It took me a few minutes traveling their direction before I too could see him. A few more caught and a few missed, all nice sized schoolies with no need to measure them.
We spent most the day out in the deep picking up one here and there and ended up with 8 with the 2 big ones in the high teens to low 20's in weight.

This is only the beginning of what's to come here deep sea fishing in Fort Lauderdale. It's going to get better…
