Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

We had a great time today deep sea fishing in Fort Lauderdale with some of New York's finest fire fighters. A good sized group was in town celebrating Frank's upcoming nuptials and wanted to enjoy a day on the water. The afternoon was theirs and they made the most of it.
It had been a grey day, with showers and light rain most the morning but nothing would dampen their spirits as we headed out and began trolling. A few Kingfish were caught and actually coming in pretty well until the school shut down and would not open their mouths to take a bait. I hate when that happens…
There was a weed line off shore that had produced nothing that morning but with zero going on inshore, we headed out to it just hoping we'd get lucky. And we did…
Small Sandpipers, a sea bird we get here often, were flying up and down the line, always a good sign. We weren't on this line more than 20 minutes when the first line went off. A nice sized Mahi-mahi was jumping. We had another strike, but missed the fish in the commotion of getting our angler settled.
As this fish was reeled in, another fish struck and a few more seen. This was turning out to be a good stroke of luck as we boated a few fish. The birds were ahead of us now and it took a bit to catch up, but as soon as we did, we were covered up again with these small Dolphin.
All in all, we caught about 12 or 14 of them. Most were returned to the sea because they were undersized but the guys didn't care. They were having a blast watching the fish jump each time they were hooked, waving the rods around, trying to get their fish in and claiming this or that one was the biggest.
When you get a group like Frank, Rob, Brian and Chris, their excitement and enthusiasm is contagious and spreads to the crew. Both Chris, our mate, and I had a blast with these guys.
We returned to the dock and met a few more of the group, cut the Mahi's up for dinner that night and had a few beers at the dock.
Our best wishes to you Frank on July 20th. We hope to see you and the boys again, or maybe your new family, for a little more deep sea fishing in Fort Lauderdale.
