Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Swordfish fishing in Fort Lauderdale can really be fun if you have a nice day or night for the trip. After fishing with Austyn, from the UK, for 2 full days it was time for his evening Swordfish trip. With Captain Tom at the wheel and Chris in the pit, the group headed out to the Swordfish grounds around 5 pm hoping for an evening of catching, not fishing.
The trip out to the grounds takes some time, usually about 1 ½ hours from shore. With the Gulfstream current running usually between 3 and 4 knots, not only must you get off shore but move south against the current as well to avoid the trip home going against things. In the previous days fishing with Austyn, we had found him to be a very patient man happy with most anything that bit. His luck had been good and we hoped for that to continue.
Setting up around dusk is the norm, being able to see from the waning light is a nice option. Smooth seas and light winds also help in presenting bait properly. And bite they did… 5 bites in total. Only one fish landed though.
As with any type of fishing, you never know how or where the fish is hooked. If the hook tries to set in teeth or bone, it usually pulls after a short time. Some bites are over quickly, other can last 20 minutes or so before letting go. Getting the fish to the boat means everything went text book and you win that round.
Pictured is Austyn and Chris with this 49" fork length Swordfish, the only one landed.

I apologize for the poor lighting, that's what you get at 2 am in the morning here. And thank you for dinner Austyn, it was great! Fishing Fort Lauderdale for Swordfish… I just love a happy ending.
