Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing has been excellent this week out of Fort Lauderdale. Good action on reef fish such as kingfish, bonito, blackfin tuna, mutton snapper, mahi-mahi, barracuda and more. The reefs are lit up with a lot of variety. It has everything to do with how much bait we have on our reefs. The baitfish are everywhere. Glass minnow schools, balls of sardines and pilchards, bonitos everywhere... these things keep the big fish here and biting.

Trolling the reef is the best technique of fishing in the summer. You drag a spread of lures and rigged baits behind the boat, simulating a school of fish trying to escape a predator. This allows you to be mobile and cover a lot of territory out there. You can experiment with trolling through different depths, zones, etc... until you find where the fish are biting the best. If you find an area where you are getting bites good, there may be a school of fish there, so troll some circles to see if you get any more bites. Trolling is a great technique because you can be having a slow day with nothing biting and in the next instant, you have 6 fish hooked up behind the boat.

Fishing the reefs in the summer in like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get. You can catch anything and everything trolling the reefs. From surface feeding big game fish to even bottom fish such as snapper and grouper, anything can be caught on the troll. You can live bait for the fish as well, but you'll catch exactly the same fish species, just less of them. Trolling is where the action is at this time of year. Good luck to everyone fishing this week. I'll sea ya on the water.
