Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report
Light breeze out of the north northeast at 5 mph – seas moderate chop – 20% chance of rain and if you don't like the weather here in Fort Lauderdale FL, wait 5 minutes and it will change to a bright sunny day. Temperatures in the high 80's in the day time and high 70's in the evening.
Mr. Allen Straughan and wife, Eileen, along with friends, Nancy and Gary from Maryland incorporated a business trip with a deep sea fishing charter with the Happy Day Today Topshot Fishing based in Fort Lauderdale FL. With blue skies and slight breeze, we headed pass the jetties in Fort Lauderdale FL to a distance of 1.8 miles from shore putting us on the drop-off, which sits in 120 ft of water. With a slight north current and bait fish on the surface at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale FL, we trolled to the north covering depths of water from 65 ft. out to 200 ft. with two plainers down, one with a 3 drone spoon and the other with a blue and white sea witch in front of a double hook Bonito strip, with two Ballyhoos and two Bonito strips to round off our surface baits.
Allen and Gary took turns catching Bonitos and King Fish, both on surface and plainer baits, as we trolled to the north off of Fort Lauderdale FL. While the two ladies were waiting their turns, I ventured out to 300 feet where I found a couple of birds feeding on the surface bait fish. I knew that larger fish would be feeding underneath those bait fish. I made a circle around the bait fish and the our two surface baits came out of the riggers and the rods bent over. Nancy was on one rod and Eileen was on the other – the ladies retrieved the lines and I could see the shimmering of the silhouette of the Tunas down deep – they were Black Fin Tunas in the 15-20 lb. range. Both ladies did a great job in reeling the Tunas into the boat for Mitch, our mate, to gaff.
By this time we had three nice Tunas, half a dozen Bonitos and three King Fish in the box. Allen made a request for a Mahi Mahi, so in search I went. With all the stars in line, Allen's wish came true with an 18 lb. Mahi Mahi. Mitch cleaned the Tuna Fish, King Fish and the Mahi Mahi so that our anglers could enjoy fresh sushi and Mahi Mahi fillets that night for dinner.
With four happy anglers and a good catch of fish on the charter boat Happy Day Today Topshot Fishing, it was time to start heading back from our deep sea fishing in Fort Lauderdale FL to the dock at Bahia Mar. This ends another successful and adventurous deep sea fishing charter on the Happy Day Today/Topshot Fishing with Captain Zsak.
