Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Deep sea fishing in Fort Lauderdale is great all year round. The water temperature ranges from the low to mid 70's to the mid 80's, which means that we have fish traveling through our wreck and reef structures throughout the year. The time it takes to reach the fishing grounds after leaving the dock can be anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes, sometimes 45 minutes when we are heading off shore.

During the winter months, we target Sailfish, among other species, but the Sails are favored by most anglers due to their show of acrobatic jumps not to mention a great fight. We have some world class areas here in Fort Lauderdale to target Sailfish due to our reefs and bottom structures. January through April are the best chances and times to go deep sea fishing and capture the Sails.

During the summer months in South Florida, Mahi- Mahi are traveling South and will pass Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Miami and down South to the Keys. We are targeting Mahi- Mahi and Wahoo anywhere from 5 to 8 miles offshore of Miami. The traveling Mahi or Dorado will gain on average 4 pounds a month, so within 5 to 6 months, we are catching 20 pound fish. They have a very fast growth rate and that is a beautiful thing as just about everyone loves to catch Mahi. Wahoso are another great pelagic species that we catch when targeting Mahi. The Wahoo's like to hang deeper in the water column. Typically we have a double hooked Ballyhoo with an Islander head running off a cigar led or a Wahoo lure. The best times for deep sea offshore fishing in Miami is May through October.

Bottom & wreck fishing is also year round. We are catching Snapper, Grouper, Barracuda, Shark, Amberjack and Cobia on the wrecks and reef structures. We encourage all of our customers to contact Captain Tom or (son) Captain David Zsak who will assist in answering any questions about what is the best charter for your group. Tight lines, Capt. Zsak (954) 439-8106 www.topshotfishing.com
