Fort Lauderdale Fishing/ Kids Fishing

Capt. John Logan
March 24, 2011
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

When Walt showed up with his 12 year old grandson Sean, fishing for himself in Fort Lauderdale was not on the program, it was all about the kid. As we trolled south I felt bad for Walt… each bite was handed to Sean, a fairly good angler for his age as Grand dad took pictures. Dolphin (Mahi mahi) and Kingfish weren't biting well and it was apparent that the ONLY way to get a rod into Walt's hands was a double strike or two fish on at once. And that just wasn't happening as we picked our way south. As the captain, I always like everyone to catch at least ONE fish. 
We got where we were going and switched to live bait hoping for a Sailfish for Sean, he'd never caught one. With the live baits out in the kites, the Kingfish bit fiercely with us catching a few and missing the small ones. They are quite inaccurate when they strike a kite bait. A few more Dolphin appeared as well as we hope the onslaught of Kings would slow so any Sailfish in the area might have a chance at one of our baits.
Another strike was handed to Sean, the glare was bad so we couldn't see what it was and as he fought the fish, another strike came. Bingo! Our Sailfish was jumping!
"Here", said Sean, "take this", as he handed the rod to Walt and grabbed the rod with the Sailfish on. Losing line as we cleared all the gear, Walt landed his first and only fish, a Bonito, and the chase was on with a 12 year old kid on the reel.
The fish measured at 79", not as big as a Tarpon he had landed but still it was his FIRST Sailfish! He struggled some in the beginning but landed the fish well and after measurements and a photo or two, it took a few minutes to revive this exhausted fish.

At least a dozen baits were sacrificed to catch this one Sail, but in Sean's eyes, it was worth it.
It just doesn't get better than this, kid's fishing off Fort Lauderdale and landing their first Sail…
