Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

This time of year Fort Lauderdale fishing is pretty good. But there is a problem, it is also our slowest time of the year for business. Once the kids go back to school, things quiet down business wise. Some beautiful days pass us by as we sit at the dock doing varnish work, painting, fixing scratches we need to address for the upcoming season. It gives us time to catch up, so to speak. But we still get out there occasionally during this time, and when we do?
Kim is a previous customer. Just a few weeks ago we had her and the girls out. Oh, and her youngest who was not a girl. We had some fun catching Kings and Bonitos with some Tuna for dinner mixed in. Today Kim showed up with her oldest son and his buddies. One had never been fishing, another had only been once and caught a small bullet Bonito. And off we went with the specific task of catching a Sailfish at some point. But first, let's get the boys some fish…
We headed off shore immediately for deeper water. 3 miles was all the further we needed to go before a few lines came down. A miss and a small Tuna was hooked and as we fought him? The other deep line went off. It took about 15 minutes to land a 35lb. Wahoo! By the boy that had never been fishing! Pretty cool and Kim was happy, she'd never seen a Wahoo before.

We chased the Tuna for a bit, caught one more and a small bullet bonito by… You guess it, the kid that last time caught the same thing. No one wanted to waste their time with this small fish, so I let them know if we used it for bait, since he reeled it in, he got whatever hit it. That was our next stop…
The deep wreck produced a nice 45lb. Amberjack, a good reward for catching "bait".

Time is always precious on a charter and we still wanted that Sailfish so we moved to shallow water and set out some live bait. Patience in this type of thing, as in all fishing, is important. A small Barracuda was caught and a Kingfish missed. It was almost an hour when "he" came along and put on quite the show dancing multiple times behind the boat after being hooked. As we cleared other lines, he took tons of line out, all which had to be reeled back in. Our angler, the young man that had caught the Wahoo was in the chair and the fight became a battle, taking over 20 minutes to land this fish… Backwards. In his attempt to spit the hook, he had done just that but had snagged himself trying to escape. We revived him for a few minutes and then watched this 40+ lb. swim away.

Now, do we post the Wahoo, the Amberjack or the Sailfish picture with this? Maybe all three? All part of a day fishing in Fort Lauderdale…
