Fort Lauderdale Fishing for Sailfish

Capt. John Logan
June 28, 2012
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Our Sailfish fishing off shore of Fort Lauderdale this year hasn't been our best. But don't let that fool you into thinking there aren't any around. Nothing could be further from the truth.
John, from Coral Springs, FL had his 2 boys in town for the holiday weekend and an impending wedding. Actually, I think it was the wedding that had them in town. His sons, Brad and the groom to be, Justin, we here for a few days of diving and fishing. They had a great dive the day before with clear waters and today was fishing.
We headed out with a baitwell full of Goggle Eyes and went straight to kite fishing. Seaweed has been abundant lately causing all kinds of problems trolling, catching the hooks on the baits and making things tough. Even kite baits get caught with this but it is easily seen and cleared, usually. 
We set up hoping for a multitude of things… Sailfish, Mahi-mahi, shark and anything else that might come along. It wasn't too long before Justin was in the hot seat with a big Sail on and jumping.
We always try and leave the kites up in case other fish are around, no sense wasting fishing time while fighting one. But some fish don't cooperate and make us bring the gear in. Justin had one of these fish as it jumped and ran, trying to get tangled in the other lines.
One of the neat things about this group was their Go Pro camera mounted on a stick. As we got the fish to the boat, the camera was placed in the water for video. I am still awaiting the shots from this and if they came out, they will be posted with this report. And they were sent...

But with one release, we set back up and didn't have to wait too terribly long before a second Sailfish came along and it was Brad's turn.
Another struggle making us bring in the gear as Brad, having seen what need to be done when his brother was in the chair, made fairly quick work of this fish. This also was released boatside. 
We still had time for another fish for John but no takers were around. Time to head in from our fishing trip off Fort Lauderdale with 2 Sails under our belt. 

Target Species:

Sailfish, Shark, Tune, Dolphin, Wahoo, Marlin, Swordfish and more
