Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

What a day for great friends and repeat customers Phil, his son Kyle, Uncle Mike and (another) Uncle Mike? I've noticed that whenever Phil and the boys show up be prepared for the unexpected, like the live well not working and a motor not starting. Well, once I remembered to turn the battery switch back on that I had turned off the night before to do some work, we were ready to rock. We came out of the gate real strong too. We cleared the inlet made a turn to the South toward Miami and got three top lines out and there was a knockdown on the left long. Richie my deckhand teased the fish back up on the bait, once we saw it was a billfish I ran down off the bridge grabbed a 20# spin outfit hooked on a live goggle eye and when Richie teased the fish close enough I pitch baited it. It wolfed the gog and we were tight.
Cooter aka the other Uncle Mike grabbed the rod and went to work on what turned out to be one of the longest sailfish battles in history and one of the biggest sailfish I've ever put a customer on. We fought that fish for well over an hour and had the leader many times. The first half of the battle we thought we had a white marlin on as some had been caught in recent days. The fish ended up being 97 inches long and just fat as can be. What a great job by everyone, that one took some team work.
We also caught a bonita trolling to the south where we ended up catching two giant amberjacks on the wreck, deep dropping live bait we had caught first thing in the morning. And to top it off we found two mahi mahi offshore as well. What a great day!
