Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Shark season is still running strong for us in south Florida this year. The shark train is still on track for record numbers of big game sharks caught this year. Hammerheads have been thick! There are lots and lots of them being caught in 350 ft of water. Besides hammerheads, there are also great numbers of mako, bull and even the uber rare thresher sharks. It's been a non-stop action season for shark fishing. Just go out there to 300-400ft of water and set up the trap. I like to put out 2-3 baits on the surface and 2 baits directly on the bottom.

Thresher sharks are very interesting sea creatures. They have a huge eyeball which allows them to see in the dark down in the depths where there is little to no light. They also have a huge tail, nearly the same length of their body. So a thresher shark with a 6ft body has a 6ft body, making a 12 ft shark. Thresher sharks always bite the bottom bait. Many of them attack the bait with their tail and get hooked in their tail. On the rare days when we do catch them, a lot of time we catch them by the tail. They are a very unique and strange looking shark and in my opinion, one of the coolest sharks in the ocean. This year has been rife with thresher sharks on our shark fishing charters.
Good luck to everyone fishing this week. The big game fish are active and it's been a great shark fishing season so far. Big sailfish are biting too. I'll sea you on the water.
