Ft Lauderdale Charter Fishing/ Dolphin

Capt. John Logan
November 12, 2011
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Our fishing charters have been poor for Dolphin off Ft. Lauderdale this summer which is when this fish is supposed to be prevalent. But recent years have shown improved fishing for these delectable creatures later in the summer and fall. Apparently this year will follow suit.
With Dr. Armab, his son Devon and friend Justin, we headed out for our day on the briny blue. I'm afraid we did not impress our guests with our first two strikes. One, a Sailfish on the deep line that straightened a hook, the second was a parted line with the fish right at the boat. We never did see what it was but it was close.
Well, that's just great…These things just don't happen in charter fishing… very often anyway. We take great pride in the tackle and its condition, using only the finest. Straightening a hook out never happens if they eat what they are supposed to. 
But things improved as we trolled and went 1 for 2 on Sailfish bites on the troll. The second fish was up and interested but mate Chris could never get him to commit to the bait, something that happened to me on the flybridge the very next day. Talk about frustration.
Justin did a great job of fighting the fish, being a mate on a head boat up north and the fish was released boatside after measuring and pictures.
Still trolling and not have had the Doc in the chair yet even though we had some fish in the box, it was his turn when a nice… no, make that nicer than nice Dolphin came roaring in and took a bait.
The funny thing is these big Dolphin, or Mahi-mahi can be more difficult to land than Sailfish. They don't play by the rules… or maybe they know that no release is in store for them like the Sailfish.
Doc is a very even tempered man and had great control in not getting excited and doing what needed to be done. Smooth lifts, steady winding and after almost 30 minutes we finally had this 30+ in the boat. Talk about relief…
We went on to flying the kites, caught a few smaller Dolphin and Devon caught another Sailfish.
But the picture I chose is the one with Devon holding that Dolphin. It was just a bit of a struggle for him. 
