Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report
I cannot say for sure how many people we take fishing each year off Ft. Lauderdale for charters. 2,000? Maybe more? Today we had the pleasure of 4 people on board, Heather, Joanie, Mike and Ray. Sorry, had a momentary lapse as I thought about all the blogs I write to cover 2,000 people plus. LOL
I've said before that I like when things start slow and build to better through the trip, but today's trip started slower than slow. It felt as if we were going backwards. We trolled over 6 miles south on the reef with one, that's right, one hit. And that, my friends, is simply amazing. You might miss fish, or at least see fish, but nothing disturbed our ride south. If I had any hair, I would have been pulling it out.
Finally down south, we tried some deep drops and a shallow wreck for a bite, which we got! Whoopie!!! But for whatever reason, we missed it and the shallow wreck provided us with nothing. Again, amazing, especially considering the bait we were using. Small bullet Bonitos do not last long when presented to these wrecks, but we released 2 unharmed.
News of an edge further off shore led us to deeper water and when our first real hit of the day came, well, this is what makes the game fun. The excitement, the screaming, you'd have thought we had a world record fish on the line. I believe it was Joanie that landed our first fish of the day, a Skipjack Tuna. Nice one too…
Of course, improving on a trip where nothing had been caught surely is easy with one landed fish but things did get better. A few more "Skippys" and a Blackfin Tuna were added. Then a Mahi joined the group in the box. Then another, and another.
We ended up with 3 Dolphin, all nice sized schoolies and 5 Tuna in all. I won't mention the Barracuda since he wasn't much bigger than the bait. LOL
So many thanks to our guests today, Mike, Heather, Joanie and Ray. They were patient troopers as we fought our way around in search of fish. Having a few beers didn't hurt either on this Ft. Lauderdale charter fishing trip.
Target Species:
Sailfish, Shark, Dolphin, Tuna, Wahoo Kingfish, Bonito, Barracuda, Swordfish Marlin and more...
