Ft Lauderdale Charter Fishing Kids

Capt. John Logan
June 4, 2012
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

One of the greatest things about charter fishing with kids off the shore of Ft. Lauderdale is seeing their excitement… In anything that is caught. Anything! John showed up with his 2 girls, Claire and Sara, age 11. We talked about the weather before leaving, a nasty thunderstorm had just cleared our area and concerns were noted. The girls were ready so we pressed on and out we went. Trolling had been producing the best results lately and Mahi's were in the area.
Our first bite came fairly soon and it was Claire's turn. Up in the big chair, her small hand around the grip of the rod, a Mahi had struck my high line… The furthest line out from the boat. With a little help from dad, she reeled it all the way in pretty much by herself and Chris boated the fish. Dinner was had. 
A bit of a wait, Sara was getting impatient but finally another fish on the same line struck, bigger than the first. Sara was determined to land her fish and did so in great form. This fish needed to be gaffed and therefore, some blood was involved when we boated him. Both fish had these girls screaming and it is that excitement that really gets to you, well, it does me anyway. The mess was cleaned, the girls kept opening the box to make sure their fish were there and we kept trolling along.
A hit and a miss, then another and John got his chance, a nice Skipjack Tuna. He didn't scream…
Claire's turn again and a small Blackfin Tuna was caught. Sara decided to hold this fish because it was so small, for a picture. These fish will stay relatively still for a bit and Sara was quite happy with that part. But they also go nuts after a short time and that produced another high shrill. LOL The fish on the deck now, Sara stepping away. It was precious.
Again Sara's turn and we had a wait for a bit for our last bite of the day, a small Mahi that was released. This did not sit well with our 11 year old angler. LOL
Claire had been pretty much against touching fish until back at the dock where the Pelicans were waiting to be fed scraps. Her fear of slimy fish slipped away as both girls had a blast feeding the birds.
