Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Kings and Wahoo are two very similar fish encountered when charter fishing in Ft. Lauderdale. Both species can be caught by trolling lures or natural baits, or in our case, a combination of both. Both can also be caught on live bait, which goes without saying.
Today from Georgia, we had Bob with his two sons, Steven and Robert, and friend Ronny out for the morning. Not the picture perfect day we would have liked with some rain beginning our trip and grey skies for the day. But these guys are hunters and weather will not deter or sour their day.
We began by trolling and found a few nice sized Kingfish right by the buoy at Port Everglades. As we traveled south, we picked at on here and one there, nothing to write home about except these were all nice sized Kings averaging about 12 pounds or so, much larger than the normal 3 to 7 lbs.
While fishing for these fish, we had the fortune, and I do mean fortune, to also catch a Wahoo on the high line from the bridge. What makes this kind of special is that both Kingfish and Wahoo have very sharp teeth and can cut through the monofilament leader we use to rig our baits. To land this fish on a rig like that? I give Bob credit where credit is due. Most would have lost this fish but he did exactly what needed to be done and we were victorious. Or should I say he was.
With the Wahoo and 7 or 8 Kings in the box by now, we decided to try for a Sailfish. With the passing cold front the action for Sails had been pretty good. But I'm afraid our efforts fell short in this aspect. Either that or the Kingfish Ate all the Sailfish because all we could muster were some more Kings, only these were quite large, in the 20 to 30 lbs. range.

All in all, we caught 12 kings, releasing 3 of them and the Wahoo, who will be residing now in Georgia.
So expect a King or 2 and maybe even a Wahoo when charter fishing here in Ft. Lauderdale. We catch them on our way to greater things.
Target Species:

Sailfish, Shark, Tune, Dolphin, Wahoo, Marlin, Swordfish and more
