Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing in the deep sea for sharks off Ft. Lauderdale has been surprisingly good lately. This time of year is not known for consistent action is this area but we have had our good days as Tim and his sons, Ethan and Evan (his "E" series as he refers to them) found out. With 6 hours to fish, we mixed it up a bit.
Some trolling brought forth Kingfish and Bonito on the reef. The action was great and everyone caught something along with a nice surprise Dolphin that kind of added icing on the cake. Time to switch things up and try for something big.
Up go the kites with live bait we'd caught on the way out and just for good measure, let's put bait out for shark. After all, you never know unless you try.
It wasn't long before we had a strike, but as usual with the sun getting lower in the west and the wind coming on shore, seeing was difficult and a Sailfish caught us before we saw him. He took the bait but jumped before we could set up on him and escaped. I think bummer describes this well…
As we reset the bait, the deep rod with the shark bait went off and everyone was all smiles as Tim climbed in the BIG boy chair to begin battle. The bite produced a 83" Sand bar shark, the largest I have ever caught. Most top out around 6' and they are mean. Very similar in shape and configuration to a Bull shark, these fish are protected and this one was released back into the wild.
Congratulations to Tim and his "E" series boys on a great trip. We hope to see them back in Ft. Lauderdale deep sea fishing again.
