It's been a good week on our sportfishing trips this week. Mahi-mahi are biting steady on the outside edge of the reef. We've hit them on several of our trips over the past few days. Dolphin come in on the reef this time of year, especially when we get an East wind that blows for a couple days straight. Mahi this time of year tend to be a bit larger in size than the ones in the summer and fall months. They grow so fast, a mahi grows to 6 pounds in its first 6 months of life. They eat a lot! These eating machines are biting in 100-450 of water, traveling in schools of 2-4 fish. We catch them the best trolling along the weedlines and especially right on the color change. The mahi-mahi fishing should get better and better over the next 2 months as Feb-April is the best season of the year for big dolphin fishing.

Wahoo are another species that hits randomly when trolling these same zones. They tend to hit your deepest bait first, so it's a good idea to always have a planer bait down with a little heavier leader (wire is best) so that you can potentially catch any wahoo that bites the line. If you use monofilament, most wahoo will cut you off right on the bite. Wahoo are more rare than most other reef fish but they especially like low barometer, rainy days and also the full and new moons. When you get the bite on the wahoo, you know it's him right away as wahoo have a tendency to zip off a ton of line right on the bite. The low barometer days this month are making the wahoo fishing excellent and you have very good chances at catching one or more of them.

Usual numbers of bonitos, kings, a few big barracudas and a random blackfin tuna are also fish you might catch on your Fort Lauderdale fishing trip this month. Good luck to everyone fishing out there this week and I'll sea you on the water.
