Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

When fishing in Ft. Lauderdale, it's not always a good thing to respond to our first question, "What would you like to catch today?" with the response… "The biggest, nastiest fish we can catch". You might just get your wish. And that was the exact case of Chris with his 2 sons, Mitch (15) and Alex (13) from Hamburg, NY.
Chris and the boys have fished with us before and even though Alex is the fish nut of the family, it was Mitch that wanted to fight something big. So we set out with live bait and shark bait to see what we could find.
It takes time sometimes to get a bite, waiting for the scent to drift across a fish, but we have confidence in what we do and waiting is part of the game. It took almost an hour before the big rod on the bottom gave a signal of interest, a bit of a bounce. Chris was alerted and stood by the rod, a moment later it doubled over and began screaming line off the reel. Fish on!
The other baits came in and we could tell by the long run that we did indeed have something big on. And it seemed to be growing as Mitch was first up. After all, it was HIS wish to catch something big…
He did a valiant job of it as long as he could, but after 15 minutes or so his arms were spent and Alex came to his rescue. A switch in anglers and we were back on our fish, whatever it was.
10 or so more minutes went by and soon Alex needed a break. Oh Dad… want a crack at this? Chris was in the chair and soon very involved in a fish that was proving to be a really tough customer. The fight took almost an hour with some doubt along the way that we would never get this fish. Finally we had the Hammerhead Shark on the leader for the third and final time, got some pictures of him and released this Sea Monster.
With all my anglers pretty spent, I asked what they'd like to do now? Something smaller was the request.
We set up trolling, we had already been through one storm and another was coming. The weed was terrible, fouling our baits. Chris, the mate, kept clearing them as we relaxed waiting for something to come along. And what did was a Sailfish for Alex.
He fought and landed this fish all by himself and I have to say I was impressed. After even a short time on the bigger reel, it takes a lot out of you. But he hung in there and was rewarded with his first Sail.

And as the skies darkened, we headed home, knowing that Ft. Lauderdale fishing had given us its best.
