Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

There are times when people request to fish for specific fish in Ft. Lauderdale. The most common are Sailfish and Dolphin. Rick and Lillian from Texas had a different request, one not usually heard by us. Many of our anglers have no idea what a Wahoo is much less want to target it. But there have been a few Wahoo around and we were more than happy to try and accommodate this fun couple.
Wahoo are known for their long, initial run and speed. A slender fish with teeth, very much the shape of Kingfish, they are usually caught anywhere from just outside the reef to anywhere off shore and can be found hiding under floating debris. And they also like a fast moving bait which can eliminate bites from other species. So when we found a nice piece of Bamboo floating in 600' of water, we got pretty excited. We became even MORE excited when one of the deep lines sang out with a good, solid bite.
Oh it's him… It HAS to be HIM! After about 10 minutes of Rick on the reel, we found it wasn't him at all but a small shark yet to be identified. We only had him at the boat briefly before releasing him but he looked like a baby Bull or Sandbar Shark.
Our afternoon progress slowly as we sped around, finally slowing down. Sometimes the best way to get a bite when things are slow is to not pay attention and just talk about other things. And as the lime aid flowed, which I believe was more Vodka than actual Lime Aid, we began catching a few fish. Rounding out our day were two Nice sized Tuna's weighing in at 14 and 20 lbs. even.
But alas, no Wahoo for Rick this time.
We're waiting on the pictures to be sent in from Rick.
Thanks guys, you were great!
