Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

We're coming into February, the best big game sailfish and shark fishing month in south Florida. While action on certain species is limited, the big game fish are moving through. February is the best shark fishing month of the year and they are biting really good this year. The hammerhead sharks are already beginning to move through. We're catching them in 300-400ft of water on the inside edge of the Gulfstream, either by kite fishing or slow bumping live and dead baits on balloons. Here at New Lattitude Sportfishing Charters, we specialize in big game shark fishing. It's 90% of what we do in the later winter through Spring fishing months. We fish for hammerheads, tiger sharks, makos, thresher sharks, bull sharks and more. Nobody catches more big game sharks than our boat because nobody spends as much time out there shark fishing in Fort Lauderdale as we do. Our efforts pay off big time this time of year with some of the biggest gamesharks to hit the dock all year.

Sailfish is the other big game fish that we spend the remainder of our fishing time going after. Our sailfishing charters are just as exciting with 7-8ft long sailfish jumping out of the water, putting on a great aerial display whenever we hook up into them. This year, the sailfish really didn't get started until January, which is really late in the year for them. We're starting to catch them a lot of them (finally!). Last year the sailfish started late as well, which we were real;ly disappointed in, until we were catching them all the way through March and April. At which point we got really exciting about the late sailfish bite, because they are usually long gone by then. But this year seems as if it will do the same thing we experienced last year with a late sailfish bite start, but also a late sailfish bite finish.

It's a great season for big game fishing in Fort Lauderdale. Lots of big fish to be caught and it's just getting started. Good luck to everyone fishing over the next few months. I'll sea you on the water.
