Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

The dolphins are biting! Everyone wants to catch dolphin because they are beautiful, fun to catch, great eating and when you do find them, they are often schooled up with multiple fish. They are a great light tackle sportfish to catch and they always get a cheer when you bring them over the covering board as a landed catch. Dolphin are a surface feeding gamefish. They hunt along weedlines, current edges and they love to hang out underneath and around floating debris. Floating debris offers smaller baitfish a little bit of protection so these smaller fish often congregate around a floating object at sea. What comes next is the predators such as mahi, wahoo, tuna and sharks. They too love to hang out around floating debris, not so much for protection, but rather for food hunting opportunities.

November and December are great months for dolphin fish. They come through strong during these months and the prevailing strong Easterly wind, brings them right to us on the reef and inside edge of the Gulfstream. This week, just about every trip we've had out there has caught at least a couple dolphin, and some trips really slammed it. This year is shaping up to be the best dolphin bite that I've seen in years.

Dolphin aren't the only gamefish in town. Tunas and sailfish are also feeding with a frenzied vigor. They are among our top species biting this month. Trolling and live baiting on the deep side of the reef or the inside edge of the Gulfstream are the best techniques to target all of these pelagic species. When you are doing these techniques, you are simultaneously targeting all of them, plus more.

We're getting into some of the best fishing of the year, so if you're waiting for a good time to get out on the water to catch these highly sought after fish, there is no time like the present. And the bite should continue strong until the end of the month. Good luck to everyone fishing this week. You should be blessed with good action on some accommodating fish. I'll sea ya on the water.
