All of us at Lady Pamela II sportfishing wish a Happy New Year to all of our angling friends and fans! We had three boats out today, and I (Captain David) was at the helm of the Lady Pamela II this afternoon. The kites were flying today, and a huge sailfish crashed one of the goggleyes hanging from the kite. It was a tricky operation to keep the stern of boat toward the fish, but good communication between me, the mate and angler resulted in some great photos and a nice catch and release of a trophy-sized fish.
The Lady Pamela III went bottom fishing in the morning and got into a ton of grey triggerfish. These are some of the finest eating fish around, but they are often tossed back by anglers because their tough skins makes them hard to fillet. A school of Almaco jacks showed up partway through triggerfish bonanza and surprised our anglers. These fish are similar to the greater amberjack but only get to about 50 lbs. Nonetheless, they put up a great fight and they are very good to eat, especially grilled or broiled.
Sailfish were the target for the LP III's afternoon trip, and they ended up two for three on sails.
The Lady Pamela IV also got into the sails on a morning trip, finally catching one fish after a few knockdowns and a thrown hook. The LP IV targeted tarpon in the afternoon, fishing live finger mullet off the bottom in Intracoastal Waterway. Our anglers had three false starts with big catfish, but after that practice with the rod, they finally hooked up a tarpon. This fish hit the bait hard, quickly pulling line, and then rushing the surface for a big tailwalking jump. Our angler sure had a lot of fun with that fish!
