Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

The night anchor fishing trip is doing really well with the Yellowtail, Mangrove and Lane Snappers. Chumming off the front and back of the boat with Menhaden blood chum as well as glass minnows, entices the snappers to come up and eat so there are schools and schools of them swimming around your bait. The Yellowtail and Mangrove Snappers are biting in about 30-40 feet of water. The yellowtails are eating mostly squid this summer. We are noticing they really bite squid the best. We are also been seeing some good sized Red Grouper at night. The Red Grouper have been usually eat the squid good too but this week, we're seeing that chunks of ballyhoo on a circle hook are working even better. A nice way to catch the the Lane Snappers is to use extra small pieces of squid (Squid McNuggets) and put them on a size 2 circle hook. Lane Snappers tend to be one of the smaller fish in the snapper family, but they school up into big numbers, so when you get into them you can catch a bunch at a time and take lots of meat home with you. Lane Snappers are a nice white pure meat that don't taste that gamey either.

While night fishing has been some of the better fishing lately, the drift fishing during the day has been pretty good this summer too. We are catching Mutton Snappers in about 60-80ft of water along the edge of the reef. Vermillion Snapper are plentiful this year and have been biting in about 350 ft of water. Vermillions like small pieces of squid on a chicken rig or single circle hook. Lots of Strawberry and Red Groupers being caught during the daytime drift. On the day trips, drifting works very well because we can cover a good amount of territory while drifting over the reef as opposed to anchoring. We still have another month of summer fishing in Fort Lauderdale, so get out there while the fishing is good. Sea you on the water,
