Great Sportfishing Action on Tuna, Mahi and Sailfish This Week

Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

It's been a great week for fishing for us here at Fishing Headquarters this week. We're getting into some big tuna, a few mahi-mahi here and there and sailfish are biting too. This is May, the greatest month of the year to go fishing in Fort Lauderdale. This is when all the biggest fish of the year hit the dock and there's no shortage of them. While most of the year, we have our good days and our bad days, May is the time of year when almost all of our trips are great ones.

Big blackfin tunas are tearing it up out there. We're catching them when live baiting goggle eyes out of the kites and also when dragging live ballyhoo out of the outriggers. We're also catching them on the troll using artificial lures. Tunas are crafty and have good eyesight. For tuna, you must always use ultra light leaders. Anything heavy just won't get eaten. This is a give and a take because we loose some very nice fish because we aren't using heavy enough tackle. But it's better to get the bite and loose one, than to fish all day and not get the bite. May is a hot month for big tuna and they are right there mixed in with sailfish and mahi-mahi too. They all eat the same stuff.

Sailfish season is best in the winter months, but that doesn't mean you can't catch them this time of year. In fact, the past few years, sailfish are biting later and later into the year. It's no different this year with a good sailfish bite happening in Fort Lauderdale right now. They love the east wind so anytime there is a NE, SE or East wind, put the sailfish baits out. The best bite is in 100-200ft of water just off the reef.

Mahi-mahi are biting too, although they are still hit or miss. Some days they are biting and other days we can't find them. The good thing is that the mahi-mahi we are finding are huge. This is the month we get the big daddy dolphin fish out here. Several monster mahi-mahi were caught by our boats over the past 2 weeks and a lot of medium sized ones. Of course, we had plenty of days without any mahi too, but that's fishing. On the days the mahi weren't biting, we still caught nice fish to bring home and throw on the grill.

It's great fishing this month on our sportfishing charters. Good action all around and some very nice fish hitting the dock. If you can do a sportfishing charter with us, your chances are excellent at finding some big fish out there. And I'm talking about the highly desired ones... mahi, tuna and sailfish. Good luck to everyone fishing Ft Lauderdale this week. I'll sea ya on the water.
