Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report
First off I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year from Good Hit Sportfishing. The action on the Good Hit has been pretty consistent, mainly targeting Sailfish for the past 2 months.
When we have wind and North current, we fish with kites and live Herring. When we have little wind and North current, we fish spinning gear with live Ballyhoo. We've caught a few Mahi Mahi, Blackfin Tunas, and Kingfish here and there ; but Sailfishing has been the most fruitful out of them all this month
The trolling has been effective as well. We usually troll when we do not have current or wind; and need to produce bites. With this fishing style, we use a number 4 and number 6 planner boards. Recently, the most effective sea witch colors have been green and pink .
The best depth for trolling action has been from 90-175 feet of water, finding the fish in deeper water when the bite is slow. Fresh bait helps too, we prefer Bonito and or Mullet strips.
I want to add that the night time Swordfishing has been great, when we get calm winter conditions. For instance, this weekend looks like great weather conditions for Swordfishing. The wind will be 5-10 knots out of the Southeast, and the moon will be approaching the Last Quarter. Winter time Swordfish are usually larger and more aggressive, and are traveling South searching for warmer waters. Last month we produced a 350lb Swordfish in 1,000 ft of water.
The fish put up an hour and a half fight, with 20 minutes of the fight directly boat side.
I hope everyone enjoys my post and has a safe 2017 .
