Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Along with the hot weather we have been having hot fishing to go along with it. The key to fishing the Ft. Lauderdale's hot weather is fishing early and fishing late. The fish bite throughout the day but the best action is in the early morning and late afternoon.
The usual kingfish action on the reef has been good with fish from 5-20lbs being fairly common. Bigger fish have come through in the last week and fish up to 40lbs have been fairly common.
Blackfin tunas have been hit or miss. Our Fort Lauderdale charters are seeing one every other trip. They become more common the closer to palm beach you get.
Sailfish remain common when you have the right conditions, again we are averaging one every other trip. The key to summer sailfish is finding some sort of an edge. The second key to catching multiple sails is having wind to kite fish more lines effectively. Slow trolling with live baits brings them in but if they wind picks up we are seeing a lot more fish coming on the kite.
Dolphin fishing has been really good they only problem being finding the good sized fish. Fish in th 15-24in. range have been every where but to catch the legal sized fish >20in. has been harder. When you have a school of 100 dolphin around the boat it has been taking 2 or 3 fish just to catch one keeper. If we have been able to find bigger floating debris or more well defined weedlines we have been able to catch bigger fish up to 20lbs.
Snapper fishing on the reef has been really good and should continue through the full moon. Mutton snapper, yellowtail snapper, and mangrove snapper have all been on the reef. They have responded well to both live bait and cut bait on the bottom. Snapper are my favorite fish in the ocean to eat and are worth the time if you are willing to try.
Daytime swordfishing was hot last week off Fort Lauderale. Less people have been targeting them this week with the wind, though it should pickup again next week when the wind dies. Last week boat were averaging 2 fish per trip up to 550lbs.
Give us a call if you want to go fishing.
