Insanely Good Fishing

Capt. Ryan McBride
May 17, 2010
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

The past two weeks the fishing has gone from good to awesome. Giant kingfish, lots of blackfins, good size dolphin, cobias, sailfish, snappers, and more. The reef has been alive.
The blackfins showed up in numbers a week and a half ago and have been here to stay. We have caught them up to 37.6lbs, which is a giant blackfin tuna and all the way down to 6lbs. Right now the average fish is in the 20-35lb. range and have been biting well off the kite in the early morning. As the day goes on they have been more likely to bite on the chunk bait, flat lines, and deep baits. Best bet has been from 100-140ft. of water. The past week our charters have been catching between 1-5 tunas on a half day.
The kingfish over the past month have been huge. There have been thousands of fish from 5-15lbs. caught but there are good amounts of 15-40lb fish to be caught. Our Fort Lauderdale charters are averaging one 40+lb fish every other charter. These are giant fish, with the past few weekend tournaments being won with fish over 50+lbs.
The dolphin have been on the reef and in the 5-20lb range. Offshore there are bigger fish but you have to weed through a lot of schoolie size fish. We haven't had to run offshore much in the past week because of the great fishing on the reef and he rough waters but the boats that have have been rewarded nicely.
We are still getting at least one shot at sailfish over the past week out of Ft. Lauderdale. With our best day at three fish. This should remain this way until July/August/September really slows, though other fish take the sailfish's place.
Cobias remain traveling through our area. Most fish are just coming through quickly but if you are lucky there are a few wrecks that are holding fish if you can get them past the sharks.
Drifting on the reef we have fished our deep rod and have had not only cobias but nice sized mutton snapper as well. Our charters have had snappers up to 9lbs. in the last week and a half and this should remain throuhout the summer months.
May/June has always been a favorite month of mine to fish here in south florida so give us a call and we can get you fishing.
