Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Great fishing this week on our deep sea fishing charters. There are some cool fish biting out there. A couple days ago, we caught a monster African Pompano. These fish are rare to be caught at all, and most of them are small. To catch one the size that we caught is extremely rare. The African Pompano we caught here was a 33 pounder. These fish have a humongous head, that they use as leverage to fight against you, making them one of the most challenging fish to catch on rod and reel. They are very beautiful with a full silver body mixed with the mother-of-pearl colors you see in certain fish. We generally catch them when fishing live baits around the wrecks but this particular one was caught trolling. Generally we can guess what kind of fish we're fighting when we hook something on the troll. This fish, we had no idea what it could be. When it popped up from digging down deep on the wire, we guessed big tuna, but we were really exciting to see it was a giant African Pompano.

Great catches of kingfish all week too. Kingfish are snapping fishing the Fort Lauderdale reefs. Good size ones too, averaging 10-12 pounds and sometimes bigger. Much larger than the regular average of 6-8 pounders throughout the rest of the year. We love to see the good kingfish bite because when they are here, it means it's going to be a good year for fishing. It means the sharks will be here solid, the wahoo and tunas which eat the same diet at kingfish should bite throughout the year. It usually means sailfishing is going to be good in the fall. When one species flourishes, so do the rest of them.

Good fishing on our fishing charters this month. Come get out on a fishing charter while fishing is really good. Don't wait for the bite to be over. Good luck everyone fishing this week. I'll sea ya on the water.
