Kingfish Dominate

Capt. Mario Cote
February 11, 2017
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Before going out of Port Everglades each and every trip we call our bait suppliers the night before to reserve some live baits for the next day's trip. The most common bait choices are pilchards and goggle eyes - and we really like to have both of them in our live well so we can target different species.

Going out the inlet, my usual choice is to go north 5 to 10 miles and fish between 100' to 250'. We usually have nicer and cleaner water and do very good, but one day we had a slow trip and the next very next day I decided to go south. And that's where we've been fishing for the last 3 weeks, and it's been paying off for our charters. The depth we've fishing the most has been inside 100' - except for the tuna, in-between 100' to 150'.

We've caught a variety of species like shark, sailfish, mutton snapper, tuna, but the kingfish bite has definitely been the very best for us - lots of them in the 20 lb. range. A few trips the bite was so good that after a few hours of fishing our customers were so happy of all the fish they caught they told me, Mario we have enough let's go home!
