Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

It's been a good week for mahi-mahi and kingfish action when fishing the reefs of Fort Lauderdale. The heat has been really brutal out there. I'm so thankful for having an air-conditioned cabin. You could die of heat if we didn't have that out there in the sun. The best technique, not just for fishing but for comfort because when the boat is moving at least you get air flow, is trolling. Trolling allows us to cover a lot of territory as well as different depths and zones to go far and wide in search of fish. We could start off trolling to the north to fish off Pompano, but then overhear on the VHF that the fish are biting in Miami, and troll right down there to get in on the action. Trolling allows us to be versatile and mobile, both factors that have strong advantages on our charters.

If we get the word that the mahi-mahi are offshore, we like to fish for them. Mahi typically mass in about 600ft of water this time of year. That's about 3-5 miles offshore. Lately, there has been so much seaweed out there, it's been easy to find them. Just troll along the seaweed lines that form up or try to find a huge mat of it and go pitch out some live pilchards near to it. Summertime mahi-mahi are usually schoolie sized, on average 3-5 pounds. They congregate in big schools, sometimes 20-30 fish in one school. This 'schooling up' gives the 'safety-in-numbers' approach to security. If you troll for them, you have a good chance at finding them.

There's good action on all our trips, you just have to wet a line. Good luck to everyone fishing out there this week. I'll sea you on the water.
