Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report
The reason it's been a while since my last report is because fishing has been occupying most of my time, and there's nothing wrong with that. I've really enjoyed the past 3 weeks on the water with some very nice weather conditions, and lots of great customers catching lots of quality fish.
As usual, most of my charters are in the Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood area, but we also did a 3-day charter to the Bahamas where we had a good time and did some reef fishing and deep dropping. We caught numerous yellowtail, sharks and many more species.
Back home, the past few week's fishing has been very good for us on most of our trips - 4 hour (half-day) trips can go by fast. On some fishing trips we caught up 12 to 15 kingfish - released most of them but kept some for dinner. The kingfish bite has been on fire lately. They've been biting live pilchards and goggle eyes very good. The best depth for us has been between 90' to 110' of water, either north or south of Port Everglades Inlet. The bite was so good on some trips, I had to conserve my bait supply. It was not unusual to put 4 baits in the water and quickly receive 4 strikes. Big kingfish are starting to show-up. We've caught a few in the 25 to 30 pound range. These larger king mackerel can put up a fierce fight on light tackle.
We also caught a few sailfish last week and a few mahi, but most of the action has been kingfish. The month of April and May are right around the corner and fishing is only going to be better. So, I'll see you on the water!
