Ladies Let's Go Fishing Charter

Capt. John Logan
April 14, 2013
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Ladies' Let's Go Fishing is a national organization dedicated to introducing and informing women of the pleasure and sport of fishing. We had a group of these gals on board today for our charter and these are NOT your normal girls out for a boat ride and just to reel in a fish. They want more… More information on how to and why. More of a "hands on" experience. I, for one, had a blast and so did first mate Andrew.

Arlene, Celeste, Elizabeth, Fiona and Laura, the team leader if you will, were ready to go as we backed into the slip to pick them up. One or two off handed comments about no "men" in the group told me we were going to have some fun. Once the boats were loaded, the girls were anxious to get started and we were off with high expectations… Fishing had been pretty good lately. Why would that change today?

Unfortunately today's fishing left something to be desired. Our area of ocean had received a ton of rain the day before and turned our usual blue ocean water a dirty green. We also had little current which kept that green water in our area with no means of escape on a 4 hour trip. While things began slowly, we did manage to catch all, at least, one fish, a couple of nice sized Blackfin Tuna to eat, an unusual Ramora and to end our day, a nice sized Barracuda. Arlene got a nice shot of that with Andrew, hope she wasn't mad we wouldn't let her hold it alone. It was still quite lively and was released back to the sea.

While I got a GREAT shot back at the dock of the girls and their catch which will be posted on our Facebook page, that's not the picture I chose for this report. As I mentioned earlier, these women want to do and learn more than just reeling in a fish. Most of our fish today were caught on the deep lines. We use a braided line with a planer attached to take the bait deep. You can only reel to the planer, after that, the shock cord must be brought in by hand, all 100'+ of it to bring the fish to the gaff. The picture I chose was one of the ladies doing just that… "Wiring the fish" as we call it, with Andrew beside her giving instructions.

The fish was boated and therefore, she did a perfect job! They wouldn't help wash the boat though… Go figure. LOL

It was our pleasure to have the "Ladies', Let's Go Fishing" aboard with us today. We look forward to their next trip.
