Late Summer Fishing

Capt. Ryan McBride
August 6, 2008
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

As with any time in the Summer fishing is best early and late. Right now the fishing can be great if you concentrate you efforts during those times. Inshore the snook fishing has been fantastic, most of the fish are in the inlets and around lit docks at night. Pilchards, sardines, goggle eyes, croakers all seem to be producing fish and it would seem that on the right tide there is no limit on the action. Again early morning, late afternoon and night are best for this action. Also at night there has been a great night time snapper bite out on the reefs. Yellowtail action has been non stop as long as you can get them in quick before the toothy fish take a bite.

On the reef the pelagic fish are biting well just a little deeper. Kingfish are ranging from 10-30 lbs. and our best bites have been off the kite and downriggers with goggle eyes and runners. A few tunas are still around and they seem to be mostly of the bigger variety pushing the 30lb. mark. A few wahoo have been around and they will bite better in the comig weeks as we come up to the full moon. Dolphin have been small and scattered with only a few fishing coming from offshore. The wrecks are still loaded with jacks if you know which ones to fish and can always be suprised by an occasional grouper, snapper, cobia, or some other mistery fish.

Swordfishing remains consistent with mostly smaller fish around but enough big ones to keep it interesting. It seems like the best bite is still in the daytime with most fish in the 100-150lb. range. Fishing from Haulover to Fort Lauderdale most boats are getting a bite on every drop.
